Moveable's placekeeping service (rather than "placemaking") prioritizes empathy, equity and collaboration with the current resources of a community to help amplify the social, physical, and cultural aspects of its public spaces.

PLACEKEEPING

While we recognize the merits of urban placemaking, we believe “placekeeping” is a more accurate term for our work. We define placekeeping as utilizing the existing community resources and growing its role and strength in the community. This is a means of developing spaces for the purpose of preserving social and cultural preservation of a space.

HOW MOVEABLE PLACEKEEPS

Our approach has one goal: to develop designs and programs that bridge the gap between the existing history and culture of a community to new creative experiences that support burgeoning business opportunities.

Our methods start by connecting with communities surrounding our projects. We use tools such as the Public Space Analysis Score to create a report with programming recommendations. Working with local partners is critical to our place keeping goals. Collaborating on programming with these partners deepens our understanding of a community's values and amplifies our appreciation for what it already is.We rely on in-person conversations with community stakeholders, surveys, and local data to understand what is important to that community, and how we can include them in our process.

PLACE SCORE

Place scores are an essential means of measuring the infrastructure of a given neighborhood and its viability for a placekeeping project. We use this score as a starting point for our projects. When paired with community input, the Score helps us understand the features and challenges of a public space. The Public Space Analysis score looks at the uses, access, comfort and civic identity of a public space. Below are some examples of metrics used to measure place score:
